In this quiet time of the snooker calendar, many players might not know that there are 8 junior snooker and billiards players planning their travels to Albury. They will represent Qld at the Mitchell Billiards National Challenge and the Individual National Championships. As team manager I will make more posts here to keep everyone updated but any support would be greatly appreciated.

    Regards,
    Ed Dinga

All the very best to our juniors. I know Josh and Kyle are practising hard as I am sure are the rest of the players.
Thanks Ed for your time and effort and let’s bring home the bacon….

    DAY 2 UPDATE – JUNIOR SNOOKER/BILLIARDS ALBURY 2019

Qld had a bye today in the teams event and will play WA tomorrow morning at 10.00am (NSW time).

    Individual updates:

    U12 SNOOKER
Our own Aaron Hands and Lilly Meldrum are tied for 2nd place in the U12 Snooker. Lilly had a close tussle today with ladder leader (Cylas Jackson of WA). Aaron won his match against 8 year old Mia Macheva (of the Shirley/Samantha/Adrian Ridley family) with two black ball games!

    U15 SNOOKER
    Group A
Josh Hands and Jayden Dinga lead this group with Josh ahead on frame difference. They will play against each other at 11.15am tomorrow with the winner likely to top this group.
    Group B
Both Xavier Daw and Josh Thrift are demonstrating some great scoring to be in second and third place in this group. Lots to play out though with four matches left to play.

    U18 SNOOKER
    Group A
Kyle Thomson leads group A being undefeated. He had a fantastic 2-1 win today against last year’s champion Marc Fridman. Some small sweet revenge for last year’s loss in the final. Great job so far Kyle, but there is more to do yet.
    Group B
Harry Mok is tied for first in this group with Denzel Nicholson of NSW. They play against each other tomorrow at 3.00pm which promises to be a close and definitive match.

    U15 BILLIARDS
Jayden is top of Group A with Josh Thrift close behind in second place. Xavier Daw leads group B with Josh Hands not far behind so hopefully this can be an all Qld top four going through to the semi final stage.

    U18 BILLIARDS
Harry Mok and Kyle Thomson are well placed in the top four at the moment but this is a tough field so positions could change in the next two days.

    U18 GIRLS SNOOKER
Lilly Meldrum is undefeated and placed second in this group. This is an amazing achievement so far from a ten year old that is playing against some 16/17 year olds. Keep it going Lilly!!

I will facebook live some more matches tomorrow. Adrian Hands and Ashleigh Thrift are also streaming some matches so feel free to login and watch their streams if you are facebook friends with them also.

    DAY 3 UPDATE – JUNIOR SNOOKER/BILLIARDS ALBURY 2019

Qld had a convincing 5-0 win over WA this morning leaving us undefeated with one match to play against NSW tomorrow.

    Individual updates:

    U12 SNOOKER
All four U12 entrants are through to the semi finals. Lilly and Aaron will play against each other with the winner through to the final. Guaranteed Qld entrant in the final! 🙂

    U15 SNOOKER
In another commanding performance from all Qld boys in this age group we fill all four semi final spots!
Josh Hands had a good win against Jayden today to finish top of their group. Josh Thrift beat Jackson from NSW to cement his place in the semis.
    Semi finals:
    Josh H v Josh T & Xavier v Jayden.

    U18 SNOOKER
    Group A
Kyle Thomson went through this gorup undefeated, only dropping one frame.
    Group B
Harry Mok came second in this group.
Good news is that we have two Queenslanders in the semis…..the bad news is that they play against each other.
    Kyle v Harry tomorrow.

    U15 BILLIARDS
Jayden finished top of Group A. Josh Thrift only just missed out on second place in the group, which would have made it another all Qld semi final series. Xavier Daw finished top of group B with Josh Hands close behind in second.
    Tomorrow’s semi finals:
    Jayden v Josh H
    Xavier v Jackson Rishworth (NSW)

    U18 BILLIARDS
Harry Mok and Kyle Thomson finished 1 & 2 in the U18 Billiards. Tomorrow’s semi finals:
    Harry v Marc Fridman (Vic)
    Kyle v Denzel Nicholson (NSW)

    U18 GIRLS SNOOKER
Lilly Meldrum placed second in this group. Her determination
showed up today and she pushed last year’s winner to three close frames, just going down 2-1. Lilly will play against Jadzia Nicholson (NSW) in the semi final tomorrow.

As you can probably guess from all of the above results, all of our Qld players are showing their very best and representing Qld with not only great skill, but also excellent sportsmanship and behaviour.

Tomorrow we have our last group stage teams match against NSW and the rest of the day is semi final time. Let’s go Qld!!!

Wednesday is the last day of the tournament when the grand finals for each age group and the team’s event will be played.

    DAY 4 UPDATE – JUNIOR SNOOKER/BILLIARDS ALBURY 2019

Qld had yet another convincing 5-0 win today, this time over NSW leaving us undefeated and straight thorugh to the final tomorrow morning at 10.00am against Victoria (Josh Thrift is the U15 Billiards player for Vics)….. Go Qld!! 🙂

    Individual updates:

    U12 SNOOKER
Lilly won the semi final over Aaron Hands with the first frame a black ball nailbiter that had the referee (John Ivett) in awe of their potting skills! Lilly Meldrum will face Cylas Jackson (WA) in the final tomorrow at 11.15am.

    U15 SNOOKER
There were two dominant performances of potting in the U15 Snooker semi finals. Josh Thrift beat Josh Hands 2-0 with some great clean potting. Xavier Daw beat Jayden Dinga 2-1 with some equally impressive potting skills and scoring power. This should be a very entertaining best of 5 final between Josh Thrift and Xavier Daw tomorrow at 11.15am.

    U18 SNOOKER
With Kyle v Harry in one semi final we were guaranteed a Queenslander in the final. Kyle prevailed with a 3-1 win in the best of 5 semi final. In a replay of last year’s final Kyle will face Marc Fridman in the best of 7 frame final at 1.45pm tomorrow.

    U15 BILLIARDS
Xavier Daw comfortably beat Jackson Rishworth in the semi final to book his place in the final. The other semi final between Jayden and Josh Hands was a nail biter with Josh finding a 19 break on the buzzer to win by one point (179-178)! Another all Qld final tomorrow between Xavier Daw and Josh Hands at 1.45pm.

    U18 BILLIARDS
Both semi finals were 90 minutes. Harry Mok had a good win against Marc Fridman (Vic) 294-197. Unfortunately Kyle had a close loss to Denzel Nicholson (NSW) 264-299 with Denzel coming home very strong in the last 20 minutes. Harry will fly the Qld flag in the 90 minute final against Denzel tomorrow at 11.15am.

    U18 GIRLS SNOOKER
Lilly won her semi final against Jadzia Nicholson (NSW) reasonably comfortably in two frames. She will face last year’s winner Teah Raeburn (Vic) in the final tomorrow at 1.45pm. I saw Lilly tonight at dinner and she had determination written all over her face….look out Teah!

So in summary we have Qld representation in every single final tomorrow, including the team’s event. I am sure everyone will play their best and show great sportsmanship whether they win or finish runner up. Let’s go Qld!!!!

**All of the above scheduled times are local NSW time. Please adjust the times back by one hour (or 30 years as some locals down here say) for Qld time.

    FINALS DAY – JUNIOR SNOOKER/BILLIARDS ALBURY 2019

The Queensland team capped off a fantastic week of performances with a huge 5-0 win over Victoria in the final of the Mitchell Billiards Teams Challenge to make it 3 years in a row!! Congratulations to all involved.

    Team:
    Lilly Meldrum
    Josh Hands
    Kyle Thomson
    Xavier Daw
    Jayden Dinga

The individual results below will give you some idea why the Queensland Team was so dominant again this year…..

    Individual updates:

    U12 SNOOKER
Lilly Meldrum defeated Cylas Jackson (WA) in the final 2-0. At ten years old Lilly caused a great stir throughout the whole snooker room with remarkable potting, tactics and such composure under pressure in a National Championship Final. This is Lilly’s first Individual National Snooker Title…see below for more!

    U15 SNOOKER
The all Qld final between Xavier Daw and Josh Thrift lived up to expectations of being an entertaining and high scoring match. The match went frame for frame until Xavier potted a great long black in the deciding frame to win 3-2. This is Xavier’s first individual national title! Josh took home the runner up trophy as well as the high break in the age group of 25.

    U18 SNOOKER
In a rematch of last year’s final Kyle Thomson was able to turn the tables this year with a convincing 4-2 win over Marc Fridman (Vic). Kyle also had the tournament high break of 40 in the final. This is Kyle’s first individual National Snooker Title after many years of hard work and persistence. Well done Kyle!

    U15 BILLIARDS
Another all Qld final with Josh Hands prevailing over Xavier Daw. Xavier had a 35 break to generate a small lead midway through the hour long final. Josh came back with a 36 (high break) to take the lead and push away to a 19 point win. Another first time National Champion. Well done Josh!

    U18 BILLIARDS
Harry Mok put up a great fight against Denzel Nicholson (NSW) unfortunately going down right at the end when Denzel made a 27 break (unfinished) to win by 8 points. Congratulations to Harry on being runner up in his first year stepping up an age group to the U18 level.

    U18 GIRLS SNOOKER
Well as amazing as it sounds Lilly Meldrum (remember only ten years old) won the U18 Girls final 2-0 over last year’s winner Teah Raeburn (Vic). Keep up the great work Lilly, we potentially have a nine time in a row winner of U18 Girls National Title!?!? With plans to have a full size table at home in the near future, this is a warning to look out for Lilly in pennant matches, local tournaments, state tournaments and junior championships for many years to come!

As Team Manager for Qld this year I would like to thank Frank Dewens tournament director, all of the organisers of the event and the many referees that gave their time to make the tournament possible. Thank you to the Qld parents for the efforts made to get their kids to this event and for being great company all week.

Thanks also needs to go to the QBSA and their executive committee for the financial support provided to the families of our Qld team. Without this support many of the kids would not be able to travel to this national event.

An extra special thanks to Bob Turpin for not only helping me out, giving the players advice whenever asked but for also refereeing many, many matches during the week when I am sure he would have preferred to sit back and watch our kids play instead.

Personally it is a pleasure to watch the continuous improvement of our juniors every year and it always reinforces the fact that the health of snooker/billiards in Qld is in very good hands.

Well done to the kids and keep up the time on the practice table. 🙂

A fantastic effort from all concerned and brilliant reports from Ed.
As Ed has said the future of Qld billiards and snooker looks very bright and hopefully more juniors will take up the sport because of these results.
